March Book Club Selection

March's book club selection is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I've read other books by her and loved them. This one is a bit different though; I've tried to start it several times and just couldn't get into it. Maybe this will be the kick start I need.

New York Philharmonic

Today the New York Philharmonic played a concert in North Korea. Attended by some 1,500 of the Communist regime's elites; perhaps more important, it was broadcast live on North Korean state television and radio, giving at least some people in the isolated, hypercontrolled state a taste of Western culture from the nation routinely portrayed as the North's mortal enemy. Some may see this as a very small and silly thing in which to find hope. I think it's a step--planting the seed of art and exchange of ideas in the minds of the youth--more powerful than any dictatorship.

FEED Projects

Lauren Bush (yes she's related to that Bush... but clearly from the younger, more socially conscious generation) designed this bag to benefit the United Nations World Food Programme. Providing children with a nutritious meal during the school day, the meals not only give kids vital nourishment, they're also the incentive many need to attend school in the first place. The FEED 1 bag is a reversible burlap and cotton bag stamped with "FEED the Children of the World" and the number "1" to signify that each bag feeds one child in school for one year. You can read more about the program here and purchase the bag and feed one child for a year here.

Office Products

The Container Store has this new line of office organization essentials. I'm thinking Navy looks really fresh and very springy. I wish Charlotte had this amazing store; looks like I'll be ordering online.

Sex and the City Movie

Last week, a better, longer sneak peek of the Sex and the City movie was leaked. Of course, it was taken off within a few hours. Lucky for us, this website still has it posted. I can't wait until May 30!

Mirrors

I love how mirrors can make even the tiniest room appear larger. I especially love huge mirrors like this one.

I Found Your Camera

The founder of I Found Your Camera was inspired by PostSecret, one of my favorite websites. This is an interview about the site and a video that was posted on You Tube. I think the idea is outstanding.

Another Reason to Recycle

It's estimated that each year the United States consumes somewhere between 100 and 300 billion plastic bags. With each one that finds it's resting place in a landfill, it will take nearly 1,000 years to degrade. That's a long time! Inspired by San Francisco's ban on plastic bags, Kendra Stanley started a website to create chic totes made of used jackets. You can purchase a bag, donate old jackets or get the pattern yourself by visiting her website.

Bookcase Styling

Styling a bookcase can add so much visual interest to a home. Stephen's mom helped me with ours and they look wonderful. Domino magazine published these great suggestions in one the latest blog entries.

Shawshank Redemption

We just saw Shawshank Redemption. Excellent acting and an amazing story of friendship. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

She is so NOT a Stepford Wife

This is an excellent article about the potential first lady.

And Spring is Here

Jamiee Rose, one of my favorite fashion and home writers, recently blogged about this cute clutch from Old Navy. It won't be available until March, but I'm definitely going to snag it when it hits the stores.

Mothology

Mothology has some really unique home accessories. Some of the items, like this bird cage are just fun to look at. It's so expensive though, I'd never actually buy it. I don't think it would be hard to find something similar on Ebay though. For way less too.

Other items like these Venetian glass coasters and silver plated toast rack are much more affordable and so chic.

Teac Stereo

Stephen's parents got us this Teac stereo system for Christmas. I love it! It has all of the essentials: AM/FM radio, CD and a place to plug in an iPod. The system has a separate subwoofer and speakers that detach so they can be moved around the room or attached to the wall. The sound is so impressive. Our system was purchased at Costco but I'm sure you can find the same one at other electronic stores.

Suzette Servers

I really love these Suzette Servers. Only question, what do you display in a mini cake dome? I can picture different cheeses when I entertain, but what about the 99% of the time I'm not entertaining? Do they just sit in the cupboard?

Wood Greeting Cards

Domino Magazine's Blog introduced me to these greeting cards. They are letter pressed onto sustainably-harvested wood. Of course, I wouldn't actually use it as a card. They are way too nice to be mailed and then eventually tossed. I'd display one as a piece of art on an easel.

Book Selection

Aunt Nancy and Elena both recommended The Bridges of Madison County. They described it as a beautiful love story. I picked it up at the library today and since I've finished the book club selection I'm starting it tonight.

Local Stops: Center of the Earth Gallery

Center of the Earth Gallery has an amazing selection of high-end art. If I could have afforded it, I would have purchased this piece.

Another NoDa Find

When I visited my friend Amelia in Seattle I purchased a photograph by Jim Nilsen. On our NoDa gallery crawl, I discovered that his work is shown at The Art Preserve. I love his images.

Dad and Elena's Visit

After a few fun filled days, Dad and Elena left today. We had a great time, seeing new things, revisiting some favorites and eating our way across Charlotte!

Day 1: Friday started with a scenic drive around the Charlotte neighborhoods and downtown, then lunch at 300 East, one of my favorite local places. After a nap, we did a gallery crawl through NoDa. While on the art walk, we all found several pieces we wanted to take home. Elena purchased a Japanese scroll and I discovered a new painter to admire. I also rediscovered a photographer. We had dinner at Alexander Michael's, which has wonderful Cajun food. The building was built in 1897 as a neighborhood grocery store {below}.

Day 2: Saturday was a day trip to Asheville to visit Aunt Nancy. We walked around downtown and ate at Tupelo Honey, which serves all local and organic food. It's fantastic. We also visited the historic Grove Park Inn {below}. When we returned to Charlotte, we walked to dinner at The Grape and had the wine expert aka Dad order some great vino for us.

And this is the view from the back.

Day 3: We visited The Light Factory and saw two great exhibits, River Docs {below} and The Stray Cart Project. We also visited the Levine Museum of the New South and explored Southern history. Dinner was at Mac's Speed Shop which has the best barbecue in town. We ended our last day renting We Own the Night which I would not recommend.

Thanks for the great visit! We hope to see them again soon!

A Map of the World

One of the ancient maps of the world
is heart-shaped, carefully drawn
and once washed with bright colors,

though the colors have faded

as you might expect feelings to fade
from a fragile old heart, the brown map
of a life. But feeling is indelible,

and longing infinite, a starburst compass

pointing in all the directions

two lovers might go, a fresh breeze

swelling their sails, the future uncharted,

still far from the edge
where the sea pours into the stars.
-Ted Kooser; excerpt from Valentines

Riding Boots

I think these are the best everyday winter boots I've seen. I know they're technically for horseback riding, but wouldn't they work perfectly with jeans too?

Product Review: Origins

Origins makes the best skin care products. I love Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash. It's perfect for my combination skin. I use it year round and never have dry, tight skin.

Never A Dull Moment exfoliates my skin, keeping it bright without being harsh and irritating.

Hammock

Someday, when I have a real backyard and not an urban patio, I will spend all my time basking in the sun, reading a good book and relaxing in a hammock like this one from Smith & Hawken.

Photographer

Dennis Barloga is my favorite photographer. His images take me away...

Sea Sponges

I've been brainstorming about what to put in my last apothecary jar in the bathroom. I finally settled on sea sponges. I think it definitely beats the old standard of hand pressed soap.

Stitched Cards

Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling handmade goods. If you love unique and handmade items, it's a great place to shop. I've found that the easiest way to shop is to search by category--it's how I found these great handmade cards that have designs stitched onto them.

Local Stops: Pewter Rose Bistro

Stephen and I joined our friends Christina and Daniel at Pewter Rose Bistro. It's right down the street from our new condo and already a Charlotte favorite.

Product Review: Soft Hands

Neutrogena makes the best cream for dry, cracked hands. I LOVE this stuff.

Local Stops: Luxe home Couture

Luxe Home Couture is my new favorite store in Charlotte. Every time I walk in, I feel like I'm going to find a new treasure.

Little Buddy

Last spring I saw this artist at the Tempe Festival of the Arts. She is one of my favorites. I love the playfulness of her work.

Another J Crew Love

This little yellow dress would be perfect to wear to a spring or summer wedding. Good thing I've been invited to two this year. {And they're both after the J Crew spring sale!}

This I Believe

NPR has a wonderful program called This I Believe. The piece features essays by Americans from all walks of life sharing their personal philosophies and core values that guide their lives. In addition to the radio segments, there is a website and also a book. Each feature collections of essays from well known Americans as well as more common folks.

White Footed Bowl

I've been looking for a white footed bowl to display fruit on the counter. So far, these are the best I've found. I want one that isn't overly girly. Let me know your pick or if you find a better one please post the link in a comment.
