Review: The Help

I'm not sure where I first read about The Help. I think it was a monthly recommendation in Real Simple or Good Housekeeping. Either way, after reading the synopsis I knew it was right up my alley.

The synopsis:
Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

Review: I absolutely loved this book. I read it in less than a week (granted I was on vacation and had long flights) but that's a recent record. I've always been interested in Civil Rights history and even more so now that I live in the South. I loved reading each woman's individual point of view and I found Kathryn Stockett's writing very easy to read. I enjoyed how each chapter alternated between different narrators, yet demonstrated how they were clearly entwined. I didn't find the book to be preachy (I was hoping it wouldn't be) but it certainly opened my eyes to several things, including practices I never knew existed. If you're searching for a heart warming book that also has a bit of history in it, I definitely 100% recommend The Help.
***** of 5 stars

P.S. If you're waiting for the review of The Whole World Over, I'm still reading it. This one popped up at the library and having been on the wait list since August, I had to take it when I got it. After I finish The Island I'll get back to it and hopefully finish it quickly.

Thanksgiving Stamps

Gasp! Another USPS stamp that isn't boring and ugly. Are they starting a trend?!

Do any of you belong to these online members only shopping networks? I belong to two, one fashion and one home goods. Typically, I get the emails, check out what's on sale and then hit delete. It's mostly because I'm worried about the no returns policy.

But, recently, I stumbled upon this scarf for $19 on Idelli. I've had a plaid black and white scarf on my shopping list for about a month now, the price was right and the style perfect. I really couldn't be happier but as for actual clothes I'm still not sure-- I'm so picky about the way they fit.

What about you, any thoughts on these sites?

Happy Monday

Happy Monday to you! I hope you had a great week while I was away! A big thank you to Alyson and Courtney for their guest blogging. I loved each post and and hope you did too!

Greece was amazing. Athens is huge with sights and sounds at every turn, while the islands are like stepping back in time. I'm going to do a few posts with photos and my thoughts but it may take a few days. We took more than 500 photos in just a week and I need to sort through them!

Posting may be a bit light this week. I'm swamped at work and need to catch up on stuff at home too. But, keep an eye out for Greece pictures, a book review and hopefully next Monday a giveaway!

As always, thanks for reading. Cheers to a wonderful week!

With Fall around the corner I can't help but hum Nancy Sinatra’s poppy go-go classic, These Boots Were Made For Walking. I recently came across a version by Eileen that lead me to the series Femmes De Paris, a collection of young French divas from the 60s singing original and cover songs from British and American hits. I'm smitten and thoroughly enjoying the mini language lessons with some of my favorite throwback tunes!

Guest Blogger: Courtney - Happy Hour

Local mixologist Ben Ng has crafted a series of cocktails paying tribute to Southeast Asia. While many of these drinks are made with exotic regional fruits like rambutan and mangosteen, there are a few that can be concocted just about anywhere. Whether you're rocking it East or West, you can shake things up at your next dinner party with these tasty treats. [from left: Rambutan Runner, Fig and Clove Mojito, Mangosteen Mist, Straits Cobbler and Feminist.]

Fig and Clove Mojito

2 lime wedges
1½ tsp sugar
10 mint leaves
60ml rum
10ml clove syrup*
20ml fig puree or fresh muddled figs

Mix the lime and sugar. Add in all the other ingredients, crushed ice and stir. Serve in a tall glass and top with ice and a mint sprig.

*Clove syrup can be added to coffee, tea, cocktails and other drinks requiring sweetening. However, add only a few drops into your drink or the bossy clove flavor is liable to dominate. For a litre of syrup you’ll need 35g of cloves, 500g of fine sugar and 500ml of water. Once the water is boiled, add sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved before adding cloves. Simmer on low heat and let it reduce for 20 minutes. Strain into a bottle and let it cool before storing in the refrigerator.

Straits Cobbler

2 pineapple chunks
50ml rum
20ml vanilla syrup
2 lime wedges

Muddle the pineapple pieces. Add to tall glass with other ingredients and crushed ice; stir.

Feminist

1 fresh strawberry
½ an inch of lemongrass stalk
2 lime wedges
40ml vodka
15ml X-Rated liqueur, for the rosy hue and flavor
20ml simple syrup

Mix the strawberry, lemongrass and lime wedges. Add in remaining ingredients; shake. Top with soda water and ice cubes.

Guest Blogger: Alyson - Hello + My Fall Essentials

hi there! this is Alyson from Unruly Things filling in for Sarah this week while she's off having a dream vacation in Greece! I'm excited to share with you some of my favorite finds from around the net this week.
first up, since fall is upon us, I can't stop thinking about fall clothes and accessories. here is a list of my fall essentials that I'd love to add to my fall wardrobe.

1. an oversized cardigan - perfect for snuggling up on brisk evenings.

2. an over the shoulder bag - so "back-to-school" cute.

3. pretty prints - for someone who loves solids, floral prints are my new favorite in deep hues of navy, ochre, grey or cranberry.

4. corduroy - I'm really loving all things textured for fall, especially a wide wale corduroy.

5. wedges - quite possibly my favorite thing about fall shoe trends are wooden wedge heels and ankle boots. not too out of control high, but right at a comfortable mid height.

Guest Blogger: Courtney - Be a Peach

Hello friends of Sarah! I'm Courtney from Inside the Loop and I'm thrilled to help keep you entertained and inspired while the cat's away.
Growing up in South Louisiana I would have called blasphemy on anyone who told me there was another place in the entire world that loved to eat more than Cajuns. 5 months ago I moved to Kuala Lumpur and have been amazed at the way Malaysians eat, sleep and breath food. 90% of all television channels are centered around gustatory delights and, luckily for me, more than half of the shows feature my all time fav, Jamie Oliver. When he recently whipped up this salad I made a beeline to lick my screen! It's the perfect recipe for celebrating Summer's end and using up those final fresh peaches.

Mozzarella and Mixed Leaf Salad with Mint, Peach and Prosciutto
Serves 4
Buffalo mozzarella cheese
Dried chili [optional]
Ripe peach
Sliced prosciutto
Mixed salad greens
Mint

Get hold of some really nice ripe peaches, pinch the skin and peel from the bottom to the top then quarter them. Rip the mozzarella into 4 and place on a plate with the peach. Lightly season. Lay a couple of slices of prosciutto over the top. Dress the mixed salad leaves and torn up mint with a little olive oil and lemon juice dressing. Throw the leaves on top of the plate and crumble a little bit of dried chili over mozzarella. Really, that simple!

PS - Here's one of my favorite sidekicks for any meal.

Guest Bloggers

Hi friends! As I'm sure you know, Stephen and I are taking a long delayed honeymoon/30th birthday celebration to Greece next week. But, no need to worry, I have two excellent bloggers lined up starting tomorrow. So without further adieu let me introduce you to Alyson and Courtney:

Alyson's blog, Unruly Things, is one of the very first I started reading. She has a great eye for vintage finds and has a simple, clean aesthetic I love. She just opened a a letterpress company, Postal Press, is a fantastic photographer, excellent cook and also does custom graphic design (she designed my blog header). In addition to loving her blog, I can personally say she is a dream to work with-- she's helping me with my little surprise. :)

Courtney is the most stylish lady I know. She worked in fashion for several years and now lives in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia with her hubby and furry child. Courtney writes Inside the Loop covering all things fashionable, all things Southern (she is from Louisiana after all) as well as reporting back to all of us curious folks about what it's like to live halfway around the globe. Her love of cooking, experiencing new things and seeing the beauty in the everyday is always evident.

I know you're going to enjoy what these ladies have planned! Welcome to Serendipity ladies!

DIY Headboard

This DIY headboard Grace did is a-ma-zing. Seriously. It looks fabulous! And I love that shape. She has me totally inspired to get working on our bedroom. Now to just pick out a fabric...

Yoga

As many of you know, one of my New Years Resolutions was to start and maintain a realistic workout routine. So, in order to help meet this goal, I signed up for a 4-week introduction to Yoga class. I think both paying for the class and knowing I have a non-refundable commitment, will help me stay motivated.

I've enjoyed pilates for a while now, but think I would benefit from the mind-body-soul aspects of yoga. And as a more practical reason, my neurologist suggested it as a way to help me relax and hopefully prevent migraines so I can eventually get of the preventative medication. Plus, have you ever seen a yoga body? They're so long and lean- beautiful!

The class starts the Tuesday after I get back from Greece-- I hope I'm up for it! Fingers crossed that I love it, I really want to!

Happy Birthday Cards + A New Etsy Seller

Yesterday I did a general search for letterpressed happy birthday cards on Etsy and came upon Lakema Letterpress and these super simple cards. I love the emphasis on typography and how they could work for anyone--young old, male or female.

Peggy is new to selling on Etsy but I can tell her shop is going to be super successful. After all, can you go wrong with letterpress?

As you all know, I'm slightly obsessed with paper. Ordering stationary always makes me happy! And, after the numerous weddings we've been to this year it was time to restock my congratulations cards. I now have a few of this one on the way and just for good measure one that says 'I love you'-- in French no less. After all, you never know when you'll need to say it.

You Snooze, You Loose... Decor Style

My friend Tonya found this dresser at a secondhand store for me. It's exactly what I want and was inspired by this picture. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, I wasn't able to see the picture until last Friday. We went to the store yesterday and it's gone! :( It's mahogany but doesn't have the red undertones that some mahogany pieces have. If you find a similar piece (straight lines, minimal details, dovetail joinery) for $500 or less please send me a link!

Happy Monday

Happy Monday to you! How was your weekend?

Mine flew by but was a lot of fun! The wedding was gorgeous-- nestled against the Boone, NC mountains, a slight breeze in the air and a celebration for a beautiful couple. Congratulations Chip and Lauren!

I did my vintage shopping and unfortunately came home empty handed! :( But, on the flip side, The September Issue was just what I expected! Fun and interesting. If you're into fashion-- or even publishing and all that goes into create the design and art side seen within-- I definitely recommend viewing it.

I hope you had a relaxing few days. Cheers to a wonderful week!

Be Good

Happy Friday! What fun do you have planned?

It has officially felt like fall for two weeks now and I L-O-V-E it. Remind me of this statement in January when I'm moaning about how I hate the cold! ;)

This weekend is going to be busy (as usual)! On top of the wedding on Saturday in which we're taking a road trip up to Bonne, NC for, we're planning a sushi dinner with some friends, finishing up the Greece planning and I'm hoping to make a sweet potato pie with all of the potatoes I've received in our CSA. Then on Sunday, I'm hitting up a second hand home goods store with my friend Tonya and we're seeing The September Issue. It's playing at the Manor Theater so definitely don't miss it-- you know how movies can come and go there quickly.

Thank you, as always, for reading. I hope you have a relaxing few days. Be good!

Simple Lovely Shop

One of my favorite bloggers has opened a shop! Filled with curiosities, vintage and new goods and eventually some handmade goods too (like her lovely necklaces) the shop is a perfectly curated collection reflecting Simple Lovely and the ideas and style her blog embodies.

Congratulations Joslyn. I can't wait to see how it evolves over the next few months!

Perfect White Dishes

The perfect dishes? I think yes.

You know how your style changes and you once thought you were more contemporary than you actually are? No? Oh, well that happened to me. Turns out my friend wants to purchase the ones I own that aren't quite perfect for me anymore. Yay to stylish friends. Yay to getting the perfect white dishes that match your style!
